It further recommends that when supporting soil is medium or soft soil, SSI should be considered but does not give any procedure regarding how SSI effect should be considered in the analysis unlike FEMA 356 and FEMA 440. IS 1893 (Part I): 2002 recommends that the effect of SSI may not be considered when the Reinforced Concrete (RC) building is supported by hard soil. Thus, there is an interaction between the structural response and the foundation soil response known as the soil structure interaction (SSI). When the structure is founded on medium or soft soil, the response of the structure influences the response of the foundation and the vice versa. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the whole system, i.e., the structure, the foundation and the ground for the seismic analysis. The performance of structures during the past earthquake has revealed that the seismic response of the structure not only depends on super structure response but also on the responses of the foundation and the ground on which it is supported.
